Educate your guests not to stand on the reef!

The staff! Amazing people, so kind and attentive. They are so hard working. The head chef would work until 11pm and then be back in again at 7am. Such hard workers. Great facilities and amazing rooms, the food is exceptional

They have a brilliant conservation centre BUT they allow people to snorkel the reef with no warning on how to swim in a reef. We had to tell a huge family not to stand on on the corals but because they couldn’t understand us they just kept standing and kicking the reef. People shouldn’t be allowed to snorkel or swim without prior warning. I suggest when you do the walk around you say to them you will kill our reef if you kick or stand on the reef. I also believe you should allow snorkelling after 3pm when the tide is low. If you want to truly commit to reef conservation- then educate ALL guests as soon as they arrive. It was very upsetting to watch families kick and stand on the reef.

Exceptional

The snorkeling at the Resort was wonderful given that within 25 metres or so we were amongst coral gardens full of tropical fish. This was the absolute highlight. Very friendly helpful staff who worked at the waterfront area, assisting with identification of fish, where to snorkel and other helpful insights. If you are after a family friendly holiday that involves time on and under the water with your children (my son is 10, and loved all the marine life), most recommended.

Lovely stay on Gaya Island- a bit pricey but very good

Gorgeous setting- the view is beautiful Food very good, lots of options- a bit pricey. Buffet dinner and breakfast very good Rooms are huge and well looked after- bath ginormous! Boat service and luggage service to rooms is efficient

Quite expensive, but we stayed during peak season Lots of additional costs at check out- boat and about 25% extra in charges Better communication needed about the boat times and the costs - only leave every 2 hours or so.

The place was a touch of luxury and staff were great. Most importantly Rozilli was the best host and most lovely friendly helpful person I met in the whole of Borneo. Nothing was too much trouble and my stay would have just simply not been the same without her. Truly incredible and she deserves to be praised and rewarded for her obvious star quality.

Relaxing and comfortable beach resort (but food is not cheap)

We liked the Japanese style design of the public areas and rooms. We stayed at a Kinabalu villa which was large and very nice. Room was very clean (apart from some marks on the headboard. Lovely bathroom with 2 sinks, large shower and bath. Large walk-in wardrobe with enough bench space for 2 suitcases. From our balcony really nice sea view of the island bay, Kota Kinabalu outskirts and Mount Kinabalu when it's clear. There were about 50 steps up to our villa, not much fun in the midday heat but manageable for us. The pool was nice and long, good for swimming proper lengths, and not too busy. Lots of available sun loungers (I think hotel was about half full) by the pool and "beach" strip near the water. The sun loungers were every comfortable. The beach area was cleaned regularly and I didn't see any plastic waste near the hotel. Wi-fi worked very well in room and public areas. Buffet breakfast and dinner had lots of choices and the food was mostly good quality and tasty. We were impressed with the food choices, which were different on all 3 evenings we were there. We had lunch at the pool bar and loved the BBQ satay chicken sticks. The staff were very hardworking and friendly, the enthusiastic chef at the egg station was always happy to chat. The only activity we did was the Coral Garden snorkeling tour, which was good even if the water visibility wasn't perfect. You could also see a good variety fish near around the boat pier. We really enjoyed our stay, it's only a short boat ride from busy Kota Kinabalu, but it feels remote and relaxing.

Separate charge for boat transfer (RM 346 for 2 people return). Small beach. Room Aircon not cool enough. The balcony was unusable most of the day as there was only a fixed bench in direct sunlight. It's a shame as there was a lot of shady space, but no chairs. Food and drink were the most expensive we've had in Malaysia after 3 weeks in various locations, comparable to UK restaurant prices. Service charges and tax were added to the prices on the menu. The buffet dinner was about RM 160-190 Ringgits per person.

Loved the room. Spacious and gorgeous. Loved the beach and restaurant area - just a beautiful island.

It’s expensive - meals expensive and not really cheap options. The main restaurant is not air conditioned and very hot.

Saba's own Fantasy Island

It's like reaching Fantasy Island. Suprt friendly staff awaits you on attival. The big luxurious villas are laid out against the lush green backdrop. With the strip of beach beds along the waterfront, the broad shallow sea entrance and diverse reef, housing numerous fish, it's an ideal place to wind down. Various restaurants offer a multitude of food opportunities.

Looking at the size of the resort, the bar area seemed very small. This resulted in people turning away while they wanted to sit down for a drink in the evening.

Absolutely stunning stay

Gaya Island Resort is absolutely stunning - peaceful, secluded, and surrounded by incredible natural beauty. The villas are huge and the views are just amazing. The staff were some of the most helpful and knowledgeable we’ve ever come across. We’ve honestly never been anywhere like it, and we’ll be recommending it to anyone heading to Sabah.

Beautiful spot, fabulous hospitality

Such an incredible location - stunning jungle behind and beautiful clear waters in front. Rooms were extremely spacious and comfortable (minor issue was some power points not working) Main restaurant was excellent - great breakfast and buffet dinner with a huge selection and staff there were super friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make sure everyone had exactly what they wanted. My boy enjoyed roti for breakfast one day and the next it wasn’t in the buffet but when he asked for it they cooked it specially for him. Staff were all very attentive and friendly and the grounds were very well maintained. Children were welcomed and even played football on the grass with my boy. There was snorkelling equipment as well as canoes and paddle boards. The coral wasn’t the best but there were some lovely fish to see. There are flying red squirrel nesting boxes and we got to see the squirrels on two occasions. Also lots of lovely bird life including lots of hornbills. Watch out for the macaques though - they are ready to steel your pizza! We loved our stay and the good far outweighed the negative but here are a few minor things that took it from a 10 to a 9: 1.The boat transfer is overpriced and the only way to get to the resort. 2. Once you are in you are in! There is nowhere accessible from the resort that isn’t part of the resort. 3. Food is excellent but not cheap and there are no outside alternatives. 4. We were a bit upset that fogging was carried out without any warning and me and my kids were caught in the fog - unpleasant, especially as we were told that this was an eco resort.

Nice resort for a couple of days toward end of Borneo holiday.

Hotel staff and wildlife guides were really very nice and worked incredibly hard to make guests happy. Food was varied and good. Range of activities for older kids to do, enough to occupy 3 or 4 days. Rooms were clean and well looked after. All the facilities worked. It's a good choice for a couple of days toward the end of your holiday in Borneo, as it is a nice resort close to KK airport.

I would say if a predominantly wildlife spotting holiday is important to you then this wouldn't be a number one choice on Borneo. Proximity of the resort to the major city of KK, and the level of human influence on the island has been quite high so you should calibrate your expectations based on that. If scuba/snorkelling is important to you there is still a lot to see underwater, but do note that the coral around the national park is currently extensively bleached and recovering.
